This collection of stories is about the unlikely heroes。 We all know them。 We see them every day。 They don’t even know they are heroes。 Until they need to be。 Heroes。I wanted to read this for Patricia Briggs’ story about the werewolf Asil， a recurring character in her Alpha and Omega series。 In Dating Terrors， Asil goes on a date （arranged through a dating app） only to find out that he was picked as a date because of his superior strength and lethal talents。 But there is also Ruby， who almost im This collection of stories is about the unlikely heroes。 We all know them。 We see them every day。 They don’t even know they are heroes。 Until they need to be。 Heroes。I wanted to read this for Patricia Briggs’ story about the werewolf Asil， a recurring character in her Alpha and Omega series。 In Dating Terrors， Asil goes on a date （arranged through a dating app） only to find out that he was picked as a date because of his superior strength and lethal talents。 But there is also Ruby， who almost immediately regrets using Asil and wants to back out。 As you can imagine， events are propelled toward a showdown that doesn’t work out how Ruby imagined it would。 The question is， will Asil ever find true love？ This is a great story for Ruby， but even more so for Asil。 Over the series， he has grown as a character and will not disappoint Briggs’ fans in this short story。Believe it or not， before I read Little Things， I had not read anything by Jim Butcher before。 This story is from the viewpoint of a sprite who must save the day while the giants （humans） around him don’t even know anything bad is happening。 I loved this story of the tiny little one using all available resources （even a cat） to overcome danger。Kerrie Hughes is another new to me author and I was delighted with Troll Life， the story of a train station attendant， Harzl， who is a disappointment to his family because he has not become a station manager yet。 But he is intuitive and strong， so with his pet barghest （large， black， toothy dog） at his side he faces down evil to protect two innocents running for their lives。 Another great thing about this story – sentient trains。Irish Wolfhound Oberon is the hero of Kevin Hearne’s Fire Hazard。 Perhaps other Iron Druid series readers will also feel that Oberon has always been great hero， but in this story， he proves that to himself。 I found several new to me authors and enjoyed long-time favorites。 Every single story in this collection is great！ They all stand alone， even if they are part of a series and there are no cliffhangers， so you will get your money’s worth on this anthology。 The collection includes:Little Things by Jim ButcherThe Dark Ship by Anne BishopComfort Zone by Kelley ArmstrongTrain to Last Hope by Annie BelletFire Hazard by Kevin HearneGrave Gambles by R。R。 VirdiTroll Life by Kerrie HughesThe Return of the Mage by Charlaine HarrisThe Vampires Karamozov by Nancy HolderThe Necessity of Pragmatic Magic by Jennifer BrozekDating Terrors by Patricia Briggs Heroic Hearts is glorious proof that urban fantasy is alive， kicking and entertaining readers everywhere！ Through Netgalley， the publisher provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

worth it for Briggs and Bishop I love The Others world and Bishop did not disappoint with this short story。 The tone felt very much like Written in Red。 Briggs continues her story stories of Asia’s dates。 I small word of caution - these are not stand alone。 You need to be familiar with the worlds to fully appreciate them。

A lot of the authors in this anthology I’ve been reading for years， so I was excited to give this a try。 I admit upfront I’m not a huge fan of short stories， but again， I’ve been a fan for years。 After reading this anthology， I was surprised to find that a couple of them are just OK， but they weren’t up to the standards I would expect。 However， some of them are great。 I’m not going to go into each story， but I will say the authors that stood out to me were Patricia Briggs， Kelley Armstrong， Kerr A lot of the authors in this anthology I’ve been reading for years， so I was excited to give this a try。 I admit upfront I’m not a huge fan of short stories， but again， I’ve been a fan for years。 After reading this anthology， I was surprised to find that a couple of them are just OK， but they weren’t up to the standards I would expect。 However， some of them are great。 I’m not going to go into each story， but I will say the authors that stood out to me were Patricia Briggs， Kelley Armstrong， Kerrie Hughes， and Chloe Neill。 The others were just more of 3 ½ to 4 stars; I liked Butcher’s story， but I felt it was a little lacking。 Overall， this is really worth reading especially if you have favorite author in this。 I did find a new author to read， though。 Recommend。 I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed。 。。。more

Urban fantasy anthology。 I read it cover-to-cover （though not in order） and didn't skip any （as I often do）。Little Things - Jim Butcher - Cute story from Toot-toot's POV。 I loved the pixie perspective and tilted world-view。The Dark Ship - Anne Bishop - In her Others world， but set in Europe far from our usual set of characters。 A good story。Comfort Zone - Kelley Armstrong - A Derek and Chloe/Darkest Powers story。 It was interesting to catch up with the now-college-age necromancer/werewolf couple Urban fantasy anthology。 I read it cover-to-cover （though not in order） and didn't skip any （as I often do）。Little Things - Jim Butcher - Cute story from Toot-toot's POV。 I loved the pixie perspective and tilted world-view。The Dark Ship - Anne Bishop - In her Others world， but set in Europe far from our usual set of characters。 A good story。Comfort Zone - Kelley Armstrong - A Derek and Chloe/Darkest Powers story。 It was interesting to catch up with the now-college-age necromancer/werewolf couple。 I know Armstrong has written other stories about them but I've only read the original trilogy。Train to Last Hope - Annie Bellet - I think this was a standalone。 Poignant story of two women looking for their daughter whose been missing for a decade。 Fire Hazard - Kevin Hearne - An Atticus story from Oberon's POV as the wolfhound finds himself having to be a hero。 Entertaining as always。Grave Grumbles - R。R。 Virdi - This author was new to me， from his Grave Report series。 An interesting premise: Quantum Leap crossed with the solve-your-own-murder trope but didn't quite gel for me。Silverspell - Chloe Neill - Another new-to-me author。 I'm guessing this is from her Heirs to Chicagoland series。 Good writing， interesting characters。Troll Life - Kerrie L。 Hughes - New-to-me author。 Cool world-building， trolls， gargoyles and sentient trains along with the more usual wizards， vamps and shifters。 Good story。The Return of the Mage - Charlaine Harris - I was hoping for a Gunnie Rose story， but instead this featured a military-style squad of soldiers and mages。 Sadly， the story seemed underdeveloped to me。The Vampires Karamazov - Nancy Holder - A neat take。 I've never read the Brothers Karamazov but enough background was provided that I never felt lost。The Necessity of Pragmatic Magic - Jennifer Brozek - Nice to see an older heroine， but the museum artifact story is one I've seen many times before。Dating Terrors - Patricia Briggs - I've been enjoying her Asil-goes-on-a-blind-date stories （If you're unfamiliar， Asil is a side character from her Alpha and Omega series） so it's no surprise that I LOVED THIS。 *happy dancing* Also， I want MORE。 。。。more

A really enjoyable collection of stories。 Be sure to have a Kleenex on hand for a couple of them。 I hadn’t read anything by Kerrie L Hughes before but the story Troll Life makes me want to read more by her。 I’ve marked Covens & Conspiracies as to read on Goodreads on the strength of her story。 Most of the authors in this book are much bigger names any urban fantasy reader is going to know。 Highly recommend and I usually like novels much better than short。

Heroic HeartsThis anthology has the theme of people acting courageous in ways that help others， sometimes at their own expense。 No matter how small or unskilled an individual， having the bravery of heart and mind can make a difference。 Most people will buy this anthology because it contains one or more of their favorite authors plus it is always a good way to sample the delights of books new to the reader。 DARK SHIP by Anne Bishop-This World of the Others story takes places in Ms。 Bishop’s versi Heroic HeartsThis anthology has the theme of people acting courageous in ways that help others， sometimes at their own expense。 No matter how small or unskilled an individual， having the bravery of heart and mind can make a difference。 Most people will buy this anthology because it contains one or more of their favorite authors plus it is always a good way to sample the delights of books new to the reader。 DARK SHIP by Anne Bishop-This World of the Others story takes places in Ms。 Bishop’s version of the Mediterranean Sea。 A young Intuit woman， Vedette， whose fishing village who is brutalized by a man， essentially a pirate， and she by family as well makes decisions to protect and save those most vulnerable at personal cost。 She helps and is eventually helped by a Sanguinati sea captain， Corvo， and some very scary Elders。 This story has some very dark elements of women used and abused reminding me of Ms。 Bishop’s other long running series。 4 StarsTroll Life by Kerrie L。 HughesA new to me author whose story has a very interesting and unique world building。 This story pulled me right in so that I want to find out more about Ms。 Hughes’s work。 Trolls are not often protagonists and this one comes across as a hero indeed。5 StarsThe Vampires Karamazov by Nancy HolderThis was a rather odd story about a vampire who is concerned for his immortal soul as well as his really nasty father and questionable brothers who are also vampires。3 StarsGrave Gambles by R。R。 VirdiThis story has an interesting premise of a detective Vincent Graves who occupied the bodies of deceased people helping to solve their case and find the killer。 4 StarsSilver Spell by Chloe Neill。From her current series， Heirs of Chicagoland， Elise Sullivan investigates the death of a werewolf unaffiliated with boyfriend， Conor’s pack。 Conor aids in tracking down who might have been responsible finding as usual some whackjob supernaturals intent on magic and mayhem。4 Stars。The Return of the Mage by Charlaine HarrisThis story features come mercenary “soldiers” who appeared in All Together Dead。 Batayna and Clovache are tasked with rescuing a fellow merc after the first mission goes wrong and someone is left behind。 3 StarsComfort Zone by Kelley Armstrong。From the Otherworld series， two college students， necromancer Chloe Saunders and werewolf Derek Souza are trying to stay out of trouble and avoid supernatural hijinks， but when a ghost asks for their help， Chloe can’t say no。3。5 StarsDating Terrors by Patricia Briggs Alpha and Omega， MercyverseThis story was my absolute favorite of the anthology。 Fans of this series in general and Asil in particular， will be thrilled that finally he has a second chance at a new love opening a heart that has centuries been shuttered by the loss and grief of his mate， Sarai。 Ghost Hunter Ruby is in desperate need of help with her magic being bound by a dark force。 When her friends and Asil’s pack conspire to have them get together from internet dating service， it becomes clear to Asil that this woman not only needs his help， but might be someone much more to him。 I hope Miss Briggs will continue this story in the near future。5 StarsAlso in the anthology are works by Jim Butcher， Anne Bellet， Kevin Hearne， Jennifer Brozek， 。。。more

This short story collection was really great a lot of really great fun short stories here to explore。 I requested this book mostly for the Patricia Briggs short story and that did not disappoint at all。 I did not realize that Asil had been getting a series of short stories and so when I read this one I was then able to go and find the previous ones and they’re all just so excellent。
